Working on: Cannons - behaviour and visual effects

Hello all !

As promised, we keep working on bringing new features to ColorSpace. Next big thing in our list: Cannons.

What would be a puzzle game be without the stereotypical "I-permanently-shoot-so-you-can't -pass-here" trap ?  Well, we chose to give this role to the incoming cannons.

Cannons will add another layer of complexity, as whenever you activate a color, all canons of that color will also be activated ! We will introduce alongside some blocker walls, to give you a chance to protect yourself if you manage your color-switching correctly. The cannon projectiles will also have a specific behavior: They can only be stopped by blockers which are not of their color!

Cannonballs pass through blockers of the same color

And explode against blockers which are of a different color

The potential of these new features is really great. We hence hope to give us even more possibilities for future Level designs, and bring you ever more challenging plays !

As for the 3D Part, We’ve reworked the Cannon asset, we had one, made during the jam but it wasn’t fitting well in the universe and the mood, so we’ve simply took the base asset and re imagined it. We’d wanted something more Stylized even if our material system won’t let us push the details with ZBrush (it’ll be done with the new décor incoming) and more "animation ready". Of course the animations will be done under Unity, this way it’ll be easier to get the level of details we want, instead of doing it under Maya.

As simple as that, there are three parts : Cannon, Handle, and the base. First the Cannon is more about stylized style, it gives a better cartoonish impression and will allow us in the future to re adapt the environment of our game, low poly is funny, but somehow we’d wanted something more detailed for the décor. Since the particule system Gregory did under Unity, it will fit way better with this than with a simple cylinder.

The Canon will be colored and the base only white, which will be a bit visible with the AO (Ambiant Occlusion), giving us something like this :
